Synopsis

It’s Not Just Me: A Story for Adoptees is a 258-word picture book for transracial adoptees, ages 3-7. The story follows Terri, a biracial girl who was adopted into a white family, as she meets Simone, another transracial adoptee. Terri and Simone quickly become best friends and trusted confidants. Their friendship opens the door to new discoveries, and they soon realize that there are tons of other transracial adoptees, just like them, within their six degrees of separation. It's Not Just Me: A Story for Adoptees is My Fairy Birthmother meets I Color Myself Different, and it's inspired by my own experience growing up as a transracial adoptee.

It’s Not Just Me: A Story for Adoptees starts with our protagonist feeling lonely, different, misunderstood, and terribly shy—both in her adopted family and in the world itself—and ends with her feeling loved, accepted, seen, confident, and joyful, with a sense of community and familiarity. By the end, she’s finally found her people, so to speak, and this newfound sense of belonging has helped her feel better and happier and more loved within herself, the world, and in the structure of her adoptive family as well.
